The Roman general in the Jewish War of 66–70 CE; but before Jerusalem was captured he was nominated emperor and returned via Alexandria to Rome, leaving his son Titus to complete the siege. He had previously (43 CE) been in command of forces in Britain, and he subdued the Isle of Wight. He died in 79 CE after a reign of conspicuous modesty and affability, and was succeeded by Titus.
